A native of Camp Springs, Maryland, Geoff Harper has retained music as an integral part of his life since he began studying cello as a child. Migrating to bass as a teenager, he studied Classical music with Bassists from the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. He began playing Jazz in his high school Jazz ensemble.
After being recognized for his talent in a high school Jazz competition, Geoff was recruited to Towson State University by one of the judges, Hank Levy, then Director of Jazz Ensembles. This environment was the gateway to Geoff’s career, and he remained in Baltimore for years to come, becoming one of the most sought-after Jazz bassists in the Baltimore-Washington area.
Geoff has traveled to most major countries around the world to play with various Jazz artists, as well as keeping busy here in the U.S. Geoff has toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and has played at jazz festivals and venues with numerous artists, including (alphabetically): Gary Bartz, Cindy Blackman, Charlie Byrd, Dennis Chambers, Cyrus Chestnut, Rosemary Clooney, Richie Cole, George Coleman, George Colligan, Marc Copland, Kenny Drew Jr., Herb Ellis, Ellery Eskelin, Sonny Fortune, Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Hart, Shirley Horn, Paul Horn, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Barney Kessel, Frank Kimbrough, Joe LaBarbera, Airto Moreira, Mark Murphy, David "Fathead" Newman, Flora Purim, Emily Remler, Woody Shaw, Gary Thomas, Stanley Turrentine, James Williams, Tom Williams, Larry Willis, and others.
